Amid a severe escalation of war in the Middle East, Europe’s three top leaders have expressed deep concern over Iran’s decision to block the Strait of Hormuz. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni pledged coordinated action to confront the potential threat from Iran during an emergency phone call.
Energy Security Crisis
In a statement released by the British Prime Minister’s Office at 10 Downing Street, the three leaders stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in international waters. Since around March 1, Iran has effectively blocked the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of a major disruption in global energy markets.
It is worth noting that roughly 20 million barrels of oil per day and about 20% of the world’s LNG trade pass through this route. Experts warn that if the route remains closed for a prolonged period, it could trigger a severe global economic recession.
Trump’s “20 Times Tougher” Warning
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has taken a hard stance on the issue. In a statement, he warned that if Iran continues to disrupt global oil transportation through the strait, the United States will respond with a military reaction “20 times tougher than any previous operation.”
Background of the Escalation: Reports of Khamenei’s Death
On February 28, a joint airstrike by Israel and the United States reportedly caused heavy damage inside Iran. Reports claim around 1,300 people were killed, and unconfirmed sources suggested that Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei may have died in the attack.
In retaliation, Iran has already launched a series of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and U.S. military bases across the Gulf region.
Defensive Preparations
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the United Kingdom has already taken additional defensive measures to ensure the security of friendly nations in the Gulf region and protect commercial shipping.
Analysts’ View
According to analysts, the Strait of Hormuz is the “lifeline” of the world’s energy supply. Continued escalation in this critical waterway could lead not only to a regional conflict but also to a global energy and security catastrophe.
